AI SEO Services: What You Are Actually Buying in 2026

AI SEO services 2026 - four engagement categories compared

Four proposals sit in your inbox, all priced differently, all called AI SEO. One bills $1,800 a month to run your existing SEO program with AI tooling. One quotes $4,500 for visibility inside ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. One wants to publish forty articles a month. One is a technical engagement for crawlers and structured data. If you cannot tell which category you are being quoted for, the invoice you approve is a guess. So here is your question: when the last proposal landed, could you name the outcome each line item was supposed to produce? The price gap between those proposals is smaller than the gap between the outcomes they promise.

I ran an agency that billed for this work before I started building tools for the people buying it, so I have read a lot of these proposals from both sides of the table. They all open with three sentences about how search is changing. Then comes a classic SEO service menu with the letters AI attached to each line. Then the case studies, which all move in one direction.

I have also audited engagements where the client was paying for a service nobody on either side could itemize. Which prompts were sampled? How often? What changed on the site? The dashboards existed. The answers did not. That is not really a story about one bad agency. It is what happens in a category with no agreed definition, and a category with no agreed definition is easy to sell and almost impossible to buy.

The Four Things Sold Under the Name AI SEO

Searchbloom writes one genuinely useful sentence at position 11 on this query: "AI SEO is not one job. It is five." Then the page uses that insight to rank companies instead of teaching you to score the work. So let me do the part it skipped.

Four services get sold under that name, and they produce four different outcomes.

What it is

What it produces

How it shows up in a proposal

Worth paying for?

Classic SEO run with AI tooling

Rankings and clicks in the classic results

Keyword research, content, links and technical fixes, AI attached to every label

Yes, at classic SEO rates. The tooling cuts the agency's cost base, not your outcome

Visibility inside AI answers (GEO and AEO)

Mentions and citations in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity

Prompt lists, mention share, citation tracking, entity work

Yes, if reporting is specified. The premium category, and the one most easily faked

AI content production at volume

Published pages

Articles per month and word counts as the headline metric

Rarely standalone. Volume without a citation strategy is a publishing bill

Technical work for AI crawlers and structured data

Pages that are crawlable, parseable and entity-clear

llms.txt, schema, rendering audit, log analysis of AI user agents

Yes, usually as a project rather than a retainer

Thrive Agency holds position 2 on this query with nine named services, every one labelled AI, and no statement of which outcome each produces. Percepture's own page description admits it ranks itself first inside its article, at position 17 on today's pull. Searchbloom does the same at position 11. When the vendor is also the editor, the buyer is left reading a pitch.

Ask which of the four rows the proposal in front of you is actually selling. If the answer is "a bit of each," the proposal is a retainer looking for a justification. For the seller-side view of the same market, AI SEO for agencies covers delivery models and margins for the agency running the work. This page is for the person approving it.

GEO, AEO, LLMO, and AI Search Optimization: What the Naming Tells You

SEO is the parent category. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) sit inside it as the sub-discipline of appearing in generated answers. AEO leans toward winning a specific answer moment; GEO leans toward the brand authority that gets cited across a category. LLMO is a newer label for the same work aimed at large language models. You do not need all four terms, but you do need to know they are not competitors to SEO, which is the implication a proposal will let you draw because it makes the new line item feel premium.

Our pages on What is AEO and SEO vs GEO unpack the naming line by line.

Then there is "AI search optimization," the umbrella term for all of it, and the framing matters commercially. Google documents the topic in its own developer guidance, and that term's results page is held by Google, Salesforce, Semrush and a trade publication. This query's results page is held by agencies.

One technical distinction worth carrying into a call: AI Overviews and Google's AI Mode still draw on classic ranking fundamentals, so the site work you have already done feeds them. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean harder on retrieval and on what other sites say about you. A vendor treating every AI surface as one channel is describing work they have not done.

What Actually Moves AI Citations, and What Does Not

Ahrefs published the study in December 2025 across 75,000 brands, and it is the most uncomfortable dataset in this subject. YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility at a Spearman coefficient of roughly 0.737, consistent across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions sat between 0.66 and 0.71.

Now the bottom of the list. Backlinks: 0.218. Domain rating: 0.266. Branded search volume: 0.352. Links and domain rating, the two levers you have paid for the longest, are among the weakest correlates of being cited by an AI system. That is the strongest argument available against any agency whose AI SEO proposal is a classic SEO proposal with a new cover page.

What does move citations: fit with retrieval, chunk-level clarity so a passage can be lifted intact, structured data, consistent entity naming, and third-party corroboration from sources the model already trusts. What does not: keyword density, and publishing volume on its own.

Two more numbers set the honest frame. Pew Research tracked 68,879 real searches in July 2025 and found that when an AI Overview is present, users click a traditional result 8% of the time against 15% without one. Seer Interactive measured the same shift in November 2025: organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell 61%, from 1.76% to 0.61%, and paid CTR fell 68%. Seer found the flip side too, which is why citation work is not vanity: brands cited in AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that are not.

Then the denominator nobody puts in the pitch. Conductor's 2026 benchmark report, covering more than 13,000 domains, puts AI referral traffic at 1.08% of all website traffic, growing about 1% month over month, with ChatGPT accounting for 87.4% of it. BrightEdge reported in February 2026 that AI Overviews trigger on about 48% of tracked queries, up from around 30% a year earlier. The surface is everywhere. The referral traffic is not. If you have not measured your starting point, our walkthrough of an AI visibility audit shows what to capture before you buy.

Positions 3 and 10 on this query are Reddit threads, and the second is worth reading before any sales call. It credits the agency that focuses on GEO and AI visibility "rather than just rebranding traditional SEO as 'AI SEO'", then hands you the buyer's test in one line: ask the vendor to explain the difference between optimizing for a crawler and optimizing for an LLM inference pass. "Vague answer there is a red flag."

The Deliverable List, by Category

This is the section to copy into your notes and hold a vendor to.

Category

Ask for in writing

What proves it happened

Classic SEO with AI tooling

Scope of work, monthly change log, named owner, the tools used

A change log you can spot-check, and rankings you can verify yourself

Visibility in AI answers

The prompt list, engines covered, runs per prompt, sampling cadence, mention share and citation share reported separately

Prompt-level reports you can re-run, with dates and source types

Content production

Volume, formats, target queries, who reviews output before it ships

Published URLs, plus the queries each one was meant to answer

Technical work for AI crawlers

Log analysis, schema plan, rendering fixes, entity naming standards

Crawler traffic before and after, with user agents named

Two lines in that table carry more weight than the rest.

The first is mentions versus citations, reported separately. A brand can be named in an answer without being the source the model cites, and those two numbers move independently. Ask for both, with the share of runs for each and the source type behind every citation. A single blended visibility score cannot tell you whether you are being recommended or merely name-dropped.

Mentions vs citations tracked separately in AI answers, 2026

The second is the prompt list itself. Ten prompts sampled weekly is a different product from two hundred sampled daily, and the proposal rarely says which one you are buying.

One question is worth answering before you buy anything, and it comes from an agency page at position 6: do you want citations and traffic, or recommendations and conversions? A citation program aims at being the source. A recommendation program aims at being in the shortlist when a buyer asks an assistant what to purchase. A retainer spent on the wrong one looks like it is working for two quarters.

The final line item is ownership. Every page on this query shows a dashboard as the agency's artefact. Ask instead what you will be able to see, export and keep at the end of the engagement, and who holds the account the data lives in.

Where AI SEO Pricing Sits, and Why

SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies in 2025: 61% were considering adding AI Overview optimization, 43% planned to fold it into existing offerings and 18% planned to sell it standalone. The average set or planned monthly fee for an AIO-only service came out at about $937. Against that, 64% of agencies still price retainers under $1,000 a month.

GoodFirms' 2026 pricing survey adds the driver. Among the 54.3% of agencies that raised prices in 2025 and 2026, 37% cited added GEO and AEO services as the primary reason, often charged separately at $900 or more per month. 52.8% introduced AI search optimization as a formal service this year. And 60.6% named measuring AI-services ROI as their single biggest AI-related challenge.

Read that last number twice. The party selling you measurement says measurement is the hard part.

Project work has its own range. Frase's 2026 guidance puts one-time GEO audits at $1,500 to $5,000, with GEO added to an existing SEO retainer lifting the recurring fee by 20% to 30%. Digital Applied's 2026 analysis puts the median monthly SEO retainer at $3,500, with 73% of agencies now including AI-assisted deliverables in standard packages.

For ongoing programs, the published sources disagree by roughly a factor of 33. WebFX's May 2026 analysis and Digital Elevator's breakdown put AI search optimization retainers between $1,500 and $50,000+ per month, and the tightest credible figure for a mid-market program is $2,000 to $10,000 a month. When the public range spans a factor of 33, the number is not a price. It is a negotiation.

Classic SEO run with AI tooling is priced near classic SEO because it is the same labour with cheaper tools. The tool changed the agency's cost base, not your deliverable. Visibility work carries a premium for three reasons: there is no historic anchor for it, comparatively few people have genuinely done it, and the buyer cannot yet tell competent work from confident work. If the seller cannot measure the outcome either, you are paying for a category still being defined.

One sibling page runs the same exercise in a different channel, and the fee mechanics read almost identically. If you buy paid media too, PPC management services is where the percentage-of-spend version of this argument lives.

The Tool Seat Hidden Inside the Retainer

This is the line item almost nobody puts in writing, and it is the easiest money on your invoice to reclaim. Visibility monitoring is a product category with published prices:

Platform

Published price

Profound

Starter $99/mo billed yearly with 100 credits a month; Growth around $399/mo; Enterprise quoted custom

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

About $99/mo per domain standalone; Semrush One Starter around $165.17/mo billed annually

Ahrefs Brand Radar

$199/mo per AI platform index, or $699/mo for the all-platforms bundle, on top of a $129+ base plan

Otterly, Peec and similar

Roughly $29 to $535/mo, tiered by prompts and engines

Now put that next to Digital Applied's figure for agency tooling spend: an average of $150 per client account per month. A reasonable number, and not the problem. The problem is what happens to it when it disappears into a retainer, with the account held in the agency's name and the prompt history leaving with them.

So ask one question on the next call: which tools in this proposal are billed to me, and can I hold those seats in my own name? An agency doing real work will say yes and adjust the fee. An agency whose margin depends on the seat will explain why the bundle is more efficient. That explanation is the answer.

Tool seat cost hidden inside an AI SEO retainer, 2026

Monitoring is the part of AI SEO that has already commoditized. You are buying an outcome, and the outcome does not require you to rent a dashboard. Our LLM visibility tools roundup covers the platforms above, and the best AI SEO tools pillar covers the wider stack.

What Your Team Can Run In-House This Quarter

Here is the honest split, in the order I would hand it to a two-person marketing team.

Tracking and monitoring. A tooling problem, not a talent problem. Prompt sampling, mention share and citation share are available at three-figure monthly prices, and the data belongs in your account either way.

Prompt and query sampling. Start with a spreadsheet if you must. Twenty prompts that matter to your buyers, on a fixed cadence, logged with dates. When a vendor later claims your visibility improved, you will have your own numbers to check it against.

Structured data and entity consistency. About a quarter of focused work. Schema on the pages that should answer questions, one consistent description of what the company does, and the same naming everywhere it appears. It is not glamorous, and it is the layer retrieval reads.

Original data and third-party corroboration. This is the part that does not fit in-house at small team sizes. Recall the Ahrefs spread: YouTube mentions at 0.737 and branded web mentions between 0.66 and 0.71, against backlinks at 0.218. The strongest levers available to a small team are content production and the earned mentions that follow, which is a capacity question. Somebody has to make the thing and publish it consistently enough that others reference it.

Two capabilities cover the in-house half concretely. An AI visibility tracker handles the monitoring line, and keyword research connects research to the brief so content work starts from real queries rather than guesses. Some vendors now wrap that same loop into a product they call an AI SEO agent, which is a tool decision rather than a services decision.

The uncomfortable middle is where money leaks. A $3,000 retainer that is 60% monitoring and 40% strategy is mostly a subscription you could hold yourself.

How to Audit an AI SEO Pitch in Ten Minutes

Five questions. The answers tell you whether there is a practice behind the proposal or only a vocabulary.

One. Which AI crawlers hit my site in the last 90 days, and what were the numbers? Listen for named user agents, request counts and dates drawn from log files. If they have not had log access, ask what they would need in order to answer. A vendor who cannot describe your crawler traffic cannot be doing the technical leg of this work.

Two. Which prompts do you sample for my category, how many runs per prompt, and how often? Ask for the list, not a description of the list. Cadence and run count are the product, and it is the fastest way to tell real monitoring from a screenshot of a trial account.

Three. What did you change on the last site like mine, and when did it ship? A named change with a date beats a case study with a percentage. Then push once and ask them to explain the difference between optimizing for a crawler and optimizing for an LLM inference pass.

Four. How will you report mentions and citations separately, and in whose account will that data live? The first half sets the reporting standard. The second settles the tool seat and the exit terms while you are still in the room.

Five. What would make you tell me this engagement is not working? A team with a real measurement practice has a threshold and a review date. A team without one answers with a feeling. This question most often ends the conversation honestly.

If three of those five answers come back soft, you have your verdict, and you did not need a reference call to reach it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is a marketing label covering four different services: classic SEO run with AI tooling, visibility work inside AI-generated answers, AI-assisted content production at volume, and technical work for AI crawlers and structured data. The label does not tell you which one a vendor sells. Ask what outcome each line item is meant to produce.

Is AI SEO different from GEO and AEO?

SEO is the parent category. GEO and AEO are the sub-discipline of appearing inside generated answers on surfaces like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. AEO leans toward winning a specific answer moment; GEO leans toward the brand authority that gets cited across a category. A vendor presenting them as separate premium products is selling naming, not work.

Is AI search optimization the same thing?

Largely, yes. It is the umbrella term for the whole area, covering classic SEO adapted for AI surfaces and the visibility work itself. Google documents the topic in its own developer guidance, which is why that term's results page is held by Google, a CRM and a tool vendor while this query's is held by agencies. If a vendor quotes you AI search optimization, ask which of the four categories that price covers.

How long until AI visibility improves?

Faster for citations than for revenue, and the difference matters. Citation gains show up in weeks to a couple of months when the work is real. AI referral traffic is a different timeline: 1.08% of all website traffic today, with ChatGPT accounting for 87.4% of it. Any proposal promising AI-referral revenue this quarter is selling a channel that has not arrived at scale.

Can I track AI citations myself?

Yes, and for a small marketing team it should be first on the in-house list. Prompt sampling and mention tracking are tooling problems with published monthly prices, and the data is more useful in your account than in someone else's. Run your own baseline first: twenty prompts, a fixed cadence, logged with dates. When a vendor later reports improvement, you will have something to check it against instead of taking the number on faith.
